It was another busy and successful maple season at the Robert W. Harrold Campus! Students in the Conservation program and our FFA chapter collected 8,500 gallons of sap and made 115 gallons of syrup. Students in other programs, including Visual Communications, Autobody Refinishing & Repair, Carpentry & Building Construction, Computer Technology and Security & Law Enforcement also played roles in helping with the project this year. In addition to collecting and boiling sap, the students created maple confections and hosted visits by other DCMO BOCES classes and Bainbridge-Guilford Elementary School, and traveled to Greene Elementary School to teach first graders about maple production. Members of the FFA chapter also traveled to Albany for Maple Day, an industry advocacy event at the state capitol, and operate the FFA store on campus where our maple products are available for purchase. We’re proud of their hard work and sweet results!

Tuesday was Wellness Day at the DCMO BOCES Support Services Center in Norwich. Coordinator of Staff and Curriculum Development Nan Gizowski led morning workshops on “Improving Your Relationship With Stress,” and in the afternoon, employees were able to participate in a number of different activities: a trivia challenge, quiet reading, coloring, and card-making. There was also a nature walk (okay, maybe with a little help from the Gator, thanks to the rain!) and cornhole (again, adapted to the weather). The day’s activities were planned and coordinated by the DCMO BOCES Wellness Committee.

The Chenango Women’s Leadership Conference took place in Norwich on Tuesday, and students from seven of the DCMO BOCES component school districts were able to attend, thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation for South Central New York, facilitated by the DCMO BOCES Enrichment Education Coordinator, Martha Ryan.

Last week, our Early Childhood Education CTE Juniors and Seniors planned and implemented an immersive astronomical experience for our preschool and elementary aged students at the Alan D. Pole DCMO BOCES Campus in Norwich. Students commenced by entering the Starlab, an inflatable planetarium (available through DCMO BOCES Makerspace Loanables) where they saw stars and constellations. Students then moved through small-group manipulative educational experiences, developed by our ECE emerging professionals. Preschoolers learned about constellations, the planets in our solar system, the orbiting of the earth around the sun, and phases of the moon. Elementary age students participated in a space-themed scavenger hunt, learned fun facts about our planets, and created a rocket ship!
Thank you to all those who helped with this exciting experience: Culinary Art instructors and students for making half moon cookies and frosting, Makerspace liaisons at the Support Service Center, and the Operations and Maintenance Department for transporting the Starlab.
