Tuesday was a field trip day for the DCMO BOCES New Visions Education program! The students, Mrs. Pedersen and Mrs. Burke were welcomed by Mark Davies, Dean of the School of Education, Human Ecology, and Sports Studies, and Pamela Hilton, Director of Enrollment, Communication, and Engagement. They then attended COMM 1400: Public Speaking class with Professor Dwyer, listening to SUNY Oneonta students deliver their speeches. Three New Vision students also had the opportunity to present their speeches to the class. It was a great experience! The group also toured the library and learned about the many academic resources available to students. Over lunch, they enjoyed an engaging panel discussion with Education faculty members and current students, asking questions and gaining valuable insight into life at Oneonta. They finished the day by exploring the beautiful SUNY Oneonta campus. It was an inspiring and informative visit!

On Friday, October 17th, Miss Greene’s and Ms. LaTourette’s classes embarked on their first field trip of the school year — a day dedicated to teamwork, connection, and outdoor learning. Under a clear autumn sky, students hiked the trails on “LaTourette’s Mountain,” played team-building games, and worked together to prepare and cook lunch over a campfire. Even Helti, one of therapy dogs at Harrold Campus, joined in the fun — offering smiles, encouragement, and a few tail wags along the way. The two teachers wanted to begin the year with an experience that would bring their students together, and it did exactly that!

In partnership with Chobani, Cornell Workforce Development for Food and Dairy Processors is sponsoring a “Dairy Processing Bootcamp” in South Edmeston later this month. This 2-1/2 day program is being held at the South Edmeston Community Church from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm October 28 and 29, and from 9:00 am – 12 noon on October 30 (participants will need to attend all three days). The bootcamp is designed to give people the foundational skills they need to get started at Chobani and to help them feel confident as they take their first steps toward employment. Throughout the bootcamp, participants will also have plenty of chances to connect directly with Chobani HR and operations staff, so it’s a great opportunity to build relationships and ask questions in a supportive environment.

Several seats have been reserved for BOCES students and alumni over the age of 18 who strongly desire to work for Chobani. Participants will learn about the company's manufacturing practices and explore job opportunities, and will receive a certificate of completion for the bootcamp itself. If a participant is especially interested in working at Chobani and wants to continue upskilling, or if they are hired there, they can also receive free access to Cornell University’s Dairy Science and Sanitation course. This course is normally around $600 and is part of the full Dairy Processing Certificate Program.

This is an excellent opportunity for DCMO BOCES students and alumni who wish to live and work in the area. For more details, email Hannah Moyal, Cornell University Workforce Specialist, at hb466@cornell.edu. The registration deadline is October 14.
