DCMO BOCES seniors in the Conservation and Heavy Equipment program at the Alan D. Pole Campus recently received training about silviculture (controlling of a forest based on establishment, structure, composition, and growth) and Forest Best Management Practices from Watershed Agricultural Council experts. Students bored trees to determine age and health, used clinometers to determine the slope of the road and estimate erosion volume for that area, created water bars to control erosion on the trails, learned to identify ash trees and signs of the emerald ash borer, used Biltmore sticks to measure the amount of board feet in an acre of land and learned about selective harvest management to promote future forest growth.
To learn more about erosion control methods specifically associated with timber harvests, the NYS Best Management Practices Guide App (available on the Google App Store And the Apple App store) is an excellent learning resource. Ms. Greene challenged her class recently to think of a career they didn’t think they could possibly do, and then simulate an experience from that career to see how well did. Her student Jon accepted the challenge, telling her he did not think he could ever be a teacher. Jon worked 1:1 with Finn from Ms. Barnhart’s class, teaching him how to make a dreamcatcher. According to Ms. Greene, Jon was an excellent teacher, showing Finn how to make his dreamcatcher and teaching him how it's used. Jon was surprised and pleased at what he was able to do, and Finn was proud of what he had made– a win-win!
