They explored different learning kits available for loan to their classrooms for Pre K-2 Grade levels. Several area educators attended a professional learning workshop at the DCMO BOCES Support Services Center on Monday. “Building Thinking Classrooms Part II: Thin Slicing to Utilize Your Curriculum,” led by Nan Gizowski, DCMO BOCES Coordinator of Staff and Curriculum Development, is the second in a set of professional learning classes focused on teaching practices for mathematics. Leadership teams from 14 school districts and both DCMO BOCES campuses attended the 2024 Leadership Academy: The Places We Go last week. The 2-day event was held at Greek Peak in Cortland, New York, and featured keynote speaker John Whalen from Edtomorrow, a group discussion centered on the issues and solutions raised in Jonathan Haidt’s book “The Anxious Generation,” presentations from two school districts (Norwich & Sherburne-Earlville)on their initiatives managing cell phone use in their schools, team building activities and several breakout sessions and informal conversations. A highlight was a question-and-answer session with a panel of 8 students from some of the DCMO BOCES component school districts, where the students shared their perspective on some of the topics and issues that were being discussed over the course of the event. The Leadership Academy is organized and presented by the DCMO BOCES Instructional Support Services Team, led by Ginger Rinaldo, Assistant Superintendent of DCMO BOCES. The 65 participants were from Bainbridge-Guilford CSD, Downsville CSD, Franklin CSD, Gilbertsville - Mount Upton CSD, Greene CSD, Hancock CSD, Walton, CSD Oxford Academy CSD, Norwich City CSD, Otselic Valley CSD, Sherburne-Earlville CSD, Delaware Academy CSD, Unatego CSD, Unadilla Valley CSD, and the Harrold and Pole Campuses of DCMO BOCES.

Over 130 area educators, counselors, administrators, school resource officers, and law enforcement personnel attended the 2024 Regional School Safety Summit Tuesday. The event was held at the Oneonta High School, and featured speakers Molly Hudsen, a middle school counselor, author and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor - Citizens Honors Single Act of Heroism, and Kim Hopkins-Betts, a clinical social worker and trainer for Dr. Ross Greene’s CPS intervention model. The event is presented by DCMO BOCES and ONC BOCES, and is co-sponsored by the Delaware County Opiate Settlement Committee.

Educators from Sherburne-Earlville CSD took part in professional learning at the DCMO BOCES Support Services Center in Norwich Tuesday. With DCMO BOCES Mental Health Coordinator Amanda Hoover, they learned about the state's policy on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and they unpacked the Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education Framework. They learned about microaggressions, implicit bias and worked together to identify best practices they could incorporate into their classroom community and curriculum connected to the four principles of the CRSE Framework. DCMO BOCES senior Justina Parsons of Greene recently competed in the SkillsUSA National Championships. A student in the Welding Program at Alan D. Pole Campus in Norwich, Justina competed in Welding Sculpture, where she finished 9th out of 44 competitors from all over the United States. The SkillsUSA competition bills itself as “the premier showcase of America’s most highly skilled career and technical education students” and “one of the largest hands-on workforce development events in the world.” It took place at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, where 6,000 competitors and thousands of spectators from across the United States gathered to watch 115 different competitions. Justina was accompanied to the event by her SkillsUSA chapter advisors Ann French and Erin Engle-Thomas, as well as her mother and grandmother. Justina credits her welding instructor Jaan Aarismaa with preparing her for the intense competition. Congratulations, Justina– we’re proud of all you’ve accomplished!

Maria LaRoutunda from Erie 1 BOCES led a full day of training at the DCMO BOCES Support Services Center in Norwich to support the development of a MTSS Roadmap for the DCMO BOCES Region. MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, which includes supports for students in academics, behavior, and attendance. The professional learning opportunity was for DCMO BOCES staff and regional leaders including administrators and instructional support team members.

Educators from Greene CSD, Delaware Academy CSD at Delhi, Oxford Academy CSD, and Unadilla Valley CSD participated in professional learning at the DCMO BOCES Support Services Center in Norwich on Tuesday. The Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) program by Lexia provides professional development for educators, focusing on scientifically-based instructional practices. It covers the relationships among language, reading, and writing, integrated literacy instruction for different levels, and reliable assessment models. The program also includes training on delivering effective instruction online and applying LETRS principles directly in the classroom to enhance student literacy. An innovative project spearheaded by DCMO BOCES School Lunch Management, with partners Rural Health Network of SCNY, SUNY Delhi, and the Catskills Agrarian Alliance (CAA), is highlighted in a new article in Food Service Director Magazine. The project involved creating tomato sauce at SUNY Delhi from locally-sourced tomatoes, for use in school lunches. The partnership received a farm-to-table state grant for the project. 82 educators, partners, and friends gathered at the Afton Golf Club Monday for a day of celebration and camaraderie, raising over $4,700 for students at DCMO BOCES. A total of 21 teams hit the links at 9:30 a.m. for a charitable round of golf in the Lew Ford Memorial Golf Outing. Congratulations to Randy Smith, Andy Kozak, Riley Smith, and Kasie Hornbeck of Team “Par-Tee-On” from Sherburne-Earlville Central School District, this year’s tournament champions!
Lew Ford served DCMO BOCES as the Assistant Health & Safety Coordinator from 1998 until his untimely death in 2016. Lew had a passion for student safety and for golf, and envisioned the tournament as an opportunity to come together after the end of the school year to celebrate and to raise funds for students.
Proceeds from this year’s outing will be shared to support students among the DCMO BOCES Backpack Program, Mountain Movers, and SkillsUSA.

Wednesday, DCMO BOCES marked the end of the school year with a year-end picnic & employee recognition celebration at the Harrold Campus in Sidney Center. Employees enjoyed a picnic lunch, prepared and served by the familiar faces of principals and administrators. Afterwards, they gathered in the gym where service anniversaries were recognized. A diverse group of stakeholders from within our DCMO region gathered Wednesday night at the Alan D. Pole Campus for a community planning session. The group included DCMO BOCES Board of Education members, DCMO BOCES admiistrators, faculty, and staff, component district representatives, business partners, parents, and students. The session was facilitated by Kevin McGowan of Leadership Solutions Advisors, LLC, a consultant group that has supported districts and BOCES across the state with this process for many years. It was a productive evening, and the insights will help guide the 2024 DCMO BOCES Strategic Plan development process as it continues on to its next stages. Thank you to all our participants!
DCMO BOCES celebrated the graduation of 22 students from the Practical Nursing Program Tuesday night, in a ceremony at the Alan D. Pole Campus in Norwich. Graduating in the Class of 2024 are Jada Albin, Gabriela Andrades, Evan Bates, Alexis Carr, Hunter Corey, Amanda Coulouris, Barbara Craver, Marissa Cuozzo, Jessica Grabo, Tori Henderson, Mallory Holbert, Tiffany Huffine, Sarah Konu, Sarah Matteson, Joanne McCauley, Alicia Mister, Danyel Muthig, Kacey Neer, Gregory O’Bryan, Shyanne Stilson, Sheri Soules and Kristine Taylor. Several students were recognized with awards, including Valedictorian Shyanne Stilson, Salutatorian Evan Bates, Barbara Craver, who received the Rising Star Award, Danyel Muthig, Outstanding Clinical Nurse Award, and Sheri Soules, who received the Nightingale Award for academic and clinical support of her fellow students.
