Educators from Gilbertsville-Mount Upton CSD and Franklin CSD joined Coordinator of Staff and Curriculum Development Christine Newell for Foundations of the Science of Reading, a professional learning opportunity presented by DCMO BOCES Instructional Support Services. The workshop explored phonological awareness, phonic knowledge, assessment choices and other issues related to reading and writing. On Tuesday, October 29, DCMO BOCES Mental Health Coordinator Amanda Hoover facilitated the Mindfulness In Education workshop at the Support Services Center in Norwich, with participants from Baingbridge-Guilford CSD, Afton CSD, Delaware Academy CSD at Delhi and DCMO BOCES. Trauma-informed schools are well-versed in co-regulating with students throughout the day to ensure nervousness and anxiety are not at high levels for our students. Building an emotionally safe classroom community with classroom circles creates affect and belonging. Affect creates the feeling of trust and care amongst each other setting our students up for greater access to learning and mastery of social skills. This greatly supports students' mental health and a positive climate as the adult models compassion and self-regulation through mindfulness and healthy conflict resolution.

DCMO BOCES brought together 130 students from 7 area school districts for a day of college and career exploration on Tuesday. SUNY Morrisville hosted the event at their Norwich campus, coordinated by the DCMO BOCES Instructional Support Services team. Students attended a panel discussion on Careers of the Future and participated in moderated College & Career presentations from professionals in the Healthcare, Law Enforcement, Business and Human Services areas. During their visit, they heard from college counselors, professors and other professionals in a variety of fields and had an opportunity to participate in a “Real Money” budgeting exercise facilitated by Sidney Federal Credit Union. This was the third in a series of college and career exploration events that DCMO BOCES is facilitating in cooperation with area colleges. The 9th grade students were from Bainbridge-Guilford CSD, Sherburne-Earlville CSD, Charlotte Valley CSD, Norwich CSD, Gilbertsville-Mount Upton CSD, Otselic Valley CSD, and Oxford Academy CSD.
DCMO BOCES welcomed business and industry professionals from a number of fields to both campuses this week. Our industry expert teachers met with their Career and Technical Education Consultant Committee members to advise them on curriculum, equipment, facilities and other topics related to the fields associated with the programs. The consultants were served dinner prepared by the Culinary Arts students at each campus, and then met with teachers in the program classrooms and labs. The Consultant Committee Dinners were held at Pole Campus on Tuesday and Harold Campus on Thursday.

Photographs by Tim Brown are currently on display at NBT Bank’s downtown headquarters on their “Wall of Art” public gallery. Tim works in the print shop at the DCMO BOCES Support Services Center in Norwich. The display will remain until the end of October, and is part of a silent auction as well, coordinated by the Chenango Arts Council. “Timothy C. Brown is a talented photographer with a keen eye,” said Alecia O’Neill, Executive Director of the Chenango Arts Council. Congratulations, Tim!
Cosmetology students at the DCMO BOCES Pole Campus did a fun project recently, recreating diseases and disorders of the skin... on cookies! Thanks to the culinary arts program for helping out with this project. The students had a great time– what a memorable way to learn!

Nearly 800 instructional staff from 8 component districts plus DCMO BOCES attended a regional learning day, Pathways to Progress on Friday, October 11. Hosted by Greene CSD and Sidney CSD and facilitated by the DCMO BOCES Instructional Support Services Team, the regional day featured a keynote by EdTomorrow and breakout sessions with various topics of interest. Teachers and paraprofessionals had the opportunity to learn about the impact of poverty through a Poverty Simulator, Culturally Responsive Teaching, Using Artificial Intelligence for Project Based Learning, Media Literacy, Teacher Wellness, Farm to School, and several others.
October 14-18 is School Board Recognition Week! Students at DCMO BOCES Alan D. Pole and Robert W. Harrold campuses presented thank you cards to members at the last Board of Education meeting. All school boards work to ensure student success, developing a shared vision and goals for the district and ensuring strategies, resources, policies and programs align with district goals. The elected members of the DCMO BOCES school board develop policies and provide fiscal oversight for the district; the District Superintendent, Michael J. Rullo, leads the implementation of the policies and strategic plan. DCMO BOCES New Vision Education students are hard at work learning about the purpose of curriculum and the various philosophies in education. Students explored three major categories of curriculum and presented them to their fellow classmates in a jig-saw style activity. They also made and presented "Meet the Teacher" newsletters. Students learned about the importance of creating a home-school connection, and their "Meet the Teacher" newsletters were the first stepping stone to bridging the gap.
