Over the past few weeks, students in Darla Ramos' classroom at Harrold Campus have been exploring and mixing different substances as part of their hands-on learning experiences. Last Friday, the class put their fine motor skills to work during a colorful volcano experiment– using droppers, students carefully added vinegar mixed with food coloring into their volcanoes filled with baking soda. As the ingredients combined, an exciting chemical reaction took place, and vibrant “lava” bubbled out of the volcanoes. Students eagerly observed the reaction: the bubbling, fizzing, and colorful eruptions. It was a fun and engaging way to explore science while strengthening fine motor skills and communication.

The New York Inspires – Portrait of A Graduate intiative brought area educators from 14 school districts and two colleges together at the DCMO BOCES Support Services Center in Norwich on February 3. There, they worked together to create a unified framework for managing seals, endorsements and designations to expand the opportunities and pathways to graduation for our students. The group brainstormed possible pathways and worked to develop a plan of next steps for the region. It was a valuable opportunity to work collaboratively to ensure that every student has equitable access to the new seals, designations and proficiency-based pathways to graduation. The professional learning opportunity was facilitated by DCMO BOCES Instructional Support Services, including presenters Superintendent Timothy Ryan, Bainbridge-Guilford CSD, Superintendent Brenton Taylor, Unadilla Valley CSD, and Counselor Jilene Nordberg, Afton CSD.
This week is FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Week, and students at Unatego Central School will be celebrating each day with themed speakers and activities highlighting careers and activities. The Unatego FBLA chapter and their advisor, Unatego business teacher Terri Jackson, organized the event, with additional support from the DCMO BOCES Career Destinations program and Work-Based Learning Coordinator Christina McCall-Hopkins. Monday’s theme was “Medical Monday,” featuring a Red Cross Blood Drive and a nurse guest speaker. Tuesday is Culinary Tuesday, and students from the DCMO BOCES Human Services program will be passing out nachos and salsa donated by Machos Tacos in Sidney. Other themes are Newsflash Wednesday, Thankful Thursday and Future Leaders Friday. The week also features class participation challenges, including a scavenger hunt and a quiz bowl. What a great collaboration!

Last week, 10th grade students from a number of area schools visited the DCMO BOCES Harrold Campus CTE programs. Teachers and current students introduced the visitors to the different career and technical programs available for them to enroll in for their junior and senior years. Students selected the programs they were most interested in and visited those areas for a hands-on experience. Participating school districts included Sidney CSD, Unatego CSD, Hancock CSD, Afton CSD, Bainbridge-Guilford CSD, Walton CSD, Delaware Academy CSD at Delhi, Franklin CSD, Otsego Christian Academy, Downsville CSD and Gilbertsville-Mount Upton CSD.

Students at the DCMO BOCES Alan D. Pole Campus recently participated in a “Random Acts of Kindness” activity organized by teacher Maggie Alexander. The activity focused on discussing and identifying ways to be kind to others. Paper hearts were distributed to classrooms, and teachers guided conversations with students, who shared their responses in multiple ways, including writing independently, receiving staff assistance, or using communication devices. Completed hearts were added to a Kindness Tree, creating a visual display of student participation and ideas related to kindness. It was an inspiring activity!

It’s Super Bowl time, and the 2 therapy dogs at DCMO BOCES Harrold Campus got in the spirit of things with their own Puppy Bowl on Friday. Helti and Scout had a grand time, zooming around the gym and playing a little football, puppy-style. Thanks to their handlers Mary Greene and Emily Whipple for arranging this fun “sports” event!

The annual Chenango County School Boards Association Legislative Breakfast was held Saturday at the DCMO BOCES Alan D. Pole Campus. John Klockowski, DCMO BOCES Board of Education member, introduced a number of student speakers, as well as the guest legislative speakers: New York State Assemblyman Joe Angelino, New York State Assemblyman Christopher Tague, and Faith Vavra, Director of Community Affairs for U.S. Representative Josh Riley’s office. The annual breakfast is an opportunity for area school board members and school administrators to hear from their local legislators, and for the legislators to hear from them on a variety of topics related to education.

Last weekend, Unadilla Valley CSD hosted a District 4 FFA Leadership Development Event. Over 180 FFA (Future Farmers of America) members from area chapters attended, where they gave speeches, presentations, recitations and showed off their interview skills. DCMO BOCES student Charity Johnson (Unatego CSD) represented the Harrold Campus FFA Chapter. She did well in the competition, and will advance to the FFA Substate Competition for Senior People in Agriculture, to be held in Windsor later this year. Charity is the the first DCMO BOCES student to advance in a Leadership Development Event in recent memory. Congratulations, Charity!

Voters in the DCMO BOCES region approved a $44.4 million capital project designed to renew and strengthen our ability to serve the students of our 16 component school districts. Proposition No. 1, to approve the reconstruction and addition project, passed 882 to 323. Proposition No. 2, the acquisition of the former Masonville Elementary School, passed 847 to 351. “We are grateful for the approval of both propositions in this capital project and, moreover, for the support shown by our DCMO BOCES community,” said Michael Rullo, DCMO BOCES District Superintendent. “Be assured, the enhancements made to our programming and our facilities through this project will benefit the students of our region for years to come. DCMO BOCES will remain an outstanding place to learn and to work. We cannot wait to see the improvements come to life and watch our students thrive as a result!”

The DCMO BOCES School Library System Communication Coordinators Meeting took place Thursday at the Support Services Center in Norwich. The meeting was led virtually by Betsy Hartnett, DCMO BOCES School Library System Coordinator, with DCMO BOCES Instructional Support Services staff Rebecca Roberts and Stephanie Zimmer facilitating at the Support Services Center. Representatives from 12 school districts participated: Afton CSD, Delaware Academy CSD at Delhi, Downsville CSD, Greene CSD, Hancock CSD, Norwich CSD, Otselic Valley CSD, Sherburne-Earlville CSD, Sidney CSD and Walton CSD. Franklin CSD/Unatego CSD joined virtually. The Coordinators Meetings take place 5 times a year to review policies and procedures, participate in continuing professional learning, and receive updates to be shared with others in the member’s school district. The next meeting will take place in March.
