Wednesday was New York State Assembly Legislative Disabilities Awareness Day, and it was also the day that DCMO BOCES Harrold Campus students from Ms. Greene’s class and from Ms. Latourette’s Retail and Human Services program enjoyed a field trip to Albany. The group was able to see both the State Assembly and the State Senate in session, and toured the impressive state capitol building and its historic architecture. They also walked through the Empire Plaza Concourse to the New York State Museum, where they enjoyed a number of exhibits about our state’s natural and human history. The students, teachers and aides had a very full and very rewarding day in our state’s capitol!

Over 50 DCMO BOCES students from both Robert W. Harrold and Alan D. Pole Campuses were at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse April 22-24 for the NYS SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships. They and their advisors joined over 3,000 student competitors from across the state for two days of skills evaluation, presentations, and leadership activities.

Competitions were held in over 80 trade areas, from Automotive Technology to Welding, spread across four large buildings on the fairgrounds (and outside, in the case of Heavy Equipment Operation). All the competitors were members of a SkillsUSA Chapter at their school, and they were accompanied to Syracuse by their advisors.

The Harrold Campus SkillsUSA Chapter was named a Chapter of Distinction. Harrold Campus Culinary Arts teacher Jeanni Romanowski was also recognized as a finalist for the Chapter Advisor of the Year Award.

SkillsUSA is a national workforce development organization for students, operating in thousands of chapters in schools across the country. Founded in 1965 to help address the ongoing skills gap, SkillsUSA seeks to empower students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders and responsible community members. DCMO BOCES has chapters at both campuses, supported by advisors Jeanni Romanowski, Amanda Larsen, Nanette LaTourette and Jamie Milk. Jennifer Lawrence, Director of Career and Technical Education at DCMO BOCES, serves as the Administrator Trustee of Area II. Nanette LaTourette, Human and Retail Services Teacher at Harrold Campus, also serves as an Advisor Trustee of Area II.

Mrs. Whyte, Ms. Callaghan, and Mr. Wilson's Earth & Space Sciences classes took a delicious detour Down Under last month, with a deep dive into Australia’s incredible geology, from the ancient rock formations of the Outback to the stunning coastal landscapes. While studying its fascinating rock layers and geological history, students fueled their curiosity with a taste of Aussie culture, including Vegemite (Australia’s favorite condiment), Kangaroo Jerky and TimTams (chocolate cookies). It’s amazing how the land shapes the food, and the food tells the story of the land! Our students discovered that geology isn’t just about rocks, it’s about understanding the world we live in, eat from, and explore every day. The students enjoyed the project, and look forward to exploring their next country!

Students in the Security & Law Enforcement program at Harrold Campus toured the facilities of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office in Delhi on Tuesday. Undersheriff Kim Smith led the students on a tour of the Public Safety Building, including the Administrative Branch, Civil Branch, Road Patrol Branch, and the Correctional Facility Branch. Afterwards, they stopped by Courthouse Square to thank Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith for donating the uniform sweatshirts they’re wearing. Students wear them on field trips, when hosting guest speakers, and for outdoor physical training during cooler weather. It was a full and informative day!
