DCMO BOCES FFA Students Receive Donation

In 2017 DCMO BOCES FFA chartered their chapter at the state and national level. Students involved in the conservation/heavy equipment program at the Harrold Campus BOCES had previously only participated at the local level in FFA. By re-chartering the chapter students have been able to be involved in competitions such as small engine troubleshooting, diesel technical mechanics, and the NYS Fair. This year, with the help of a donation from the Sidney Center Tractor Parade, students plan on competing at the NYS FFA Convention in Syracuse, NY. The donation from the Sidney Center Tractor Parade allowed the chapter to purchase FFA official dress jackets which are required to compete in some competitions. FFA jackets are essential piece while competing. The national blue corduroy with corn gold emblem and chapter name allow students to be in official dress, a dress code that needs to be met to compete at the state and national levels.

At state convention in Syracuse this year members hope to compete in career development events in forestry, agricultural mechanics, agricultural sales and maple production. Career development events help students prepare for an area in a career cluster and aid in promoting premier leadership and personal growth of the students. For each one of the CDEs DCMO BOCES FFA plans on competing in, a team of four is challenged to demonstrate understanding and performance in their areas of competition.

Being involved in the FFA allows students an opportunity to further work on their supervised agricultural experiences, leadership development, and community involvement. As an active member of the FFA students are provided with opportunities to network with business and industry leaders and college representatives and can also earn scholarship monies to further their education. DCMO BOCES FFA would like to thank the Sidney Center Tractor Parade Committee for their generous donation and we hope to be successful competitors at our first NYS FFA Convention in May.
