DCMO BOCES is hosting and presenting multiple professional development programs for educators, counselors and community supporting organizations this month. These special education sessions are focusing on the current needs of our students.
Among the initiatives is the "Youth Mental Health First Aid USA" program designed by the National Council for Behavioral Health with the goal of assessing the risk factors and support youth to seek self help.
The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8 hour public education program which introduces participatns to the unique ristk factos and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents and builds understanding of the importance of early intervention.
We learned a core five step action plan:
- Asess for risk of suicide or harm
- Listen nonjudgmentally
- Give reasurrance and information
- Encourage appropriate professional help
- Encourage self-help and other support strategies
