The Scholar Recognition Planning Committee announced today preparation for the 2021 in-person award ceremony will begin with a targeted date of May 12, 2021, at the SUNY Oneonta's Alumni Field House. Plans contingent on the NYS Governor's instructions for social distancing and permission from SUNY Oneonta aim to bring back the traditional banquet and celebration event.
Understanding the restrictions COVID-19 might impose on social gatherings, the committee also discussed the alternative recognition ideas to reward students in the event that a virtual ceremony is needed. Long term committee member and main sponsor, Tim Parsons from NBT Insurance Agency commented that strong support from sponsors solidifies the event’s purpose to bring together business and education with the goal of retaining our youth in our community.
The Scholar Recognition Program was an initiative of the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce to enhance relationships between the business community, schools, and institutions of higher and continuing education. At a celebration banquet, the program recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement by a member of the graduating classes of the public, private and parochial secondary schools in the DCMO and ONC BOCES supervisory areas. It also recognizes the mentors who had a significant and beneficial influence on his/her education. Student representatives are chosen on the basis of scholarship, as well as leadership and service to his or her school and community. Mentors can be from any grade level and any subject area, from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
Business, community, and higher education organizations sponsor a school table. Their contributions offset the banquet expenses cost and provide the opportunity for the students and mentors to enjoy a special recognition event with family, school administrators, and sponsors.
The Sponsorship Pledge period for long term sponsors has begun. Pledges can be placed at the following link:
