Career Connections Day at DCMO BOCES regarded as a true resource

On Tuesday, November 1, at the Pole Campus in Norwich and Thursday, November 3, at the Harrold Campus in Masonville, morning and afternoon students, along with Oxford 10th graders, participated in Career Connections Day.

Career Connections Day is an event where students get to meet with local professionals in a variety of industries to talk candidly about their career paths.  Students could ask questions and see what it is like to be part of an industry.  Students could also participate in career-focused workshops, including Resume Writing, How to Apply to Jobs, Interview Tips, What to Expect on the Job, and First Impressions and Professionalism.

There were over 90 regional business professionals who participated in the event.  There were over 500 students who participated in the event.  Students and business partners were from the DCMO BOCES component district schools and towns and from as far away as Binghamton and Albany.

Students who participated in the event commented that they gathered much information that day about jobs they hadn't considered and things they hadn't thought about.  One student mentioned that they are excited to look more into becoming an EMT after speaking to the guest speakers in the health sciences session. Another student said they learned a lot about the importance of general job skills, like showing up to work on time actually means getting to work at least 10 minutes early and being ready to work when your shift starts.

Overall it was a successful event that enabled local employers to share some of their knowledge and wisdom with students who are starting to think more about their career futures.

Thank you to all the business partners and students who participated.  Special thanks go out to:
