Additional Special Education Services

 

Consultant Teacher

This service provides special education support to students participating in GED, Career Academy, and Occupational Education Programs. Specific support services include instructional adaptation, assistance in test modification, and other services as directed by students' IEPs.

Home Bound Instructor

This special service was designed to meet the educational needs of students who are too medically fragile to attend regular school programs. BOCES will provide special education teachers in students' homes as requested by component districts.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is a health profession that uses the approach of purposeful, goal-directed activities with a functional outcome. In the educational setting, occupational therapists use activities and adaptations to facilitate the students' independent function and participation in the educational process (obtained from: Guidelines for Occupational Therapy Services in School Systems, The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc, 1987).

The services of occupational therapists are provided on an hourly basis to identified students based on CSE or Section 504 considerations. Districts may be eligible for Medicaid reimbursements for a portion of costs incurred.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a health profession that is concerned with providing services to individuals to prevent or minimize disability, relieve pain, develop and improve sensory and motor function, control postural deviations, and establish and maintain maximum performance with the individual's capabilities. School-based physical therapy is concerned with the development and maintenance of students' physical ability in the educational environment. (Obtained from the American Physical Therapy Association, 1987).

The services of occupational therapists are provided on an hourly basis to identified students based on CSE or Section 504 considerations. Districts may be eligible for Medicaid reimbursements for a portion of costs incurred.

School Psychologist

BOCES provides itinerant psychologists for two or more school districts in the areas of student testing, evaluation, counseling, and in-service for teaching staff. Separate COSERs are available for services to the general population and for services provided to students with disabilities.

Speech Therapy

BOCES provides itinerant speech therapists for two or more school districts to work with students with disabilities who exhibit articulation and/or language problems, voice impairment, and/or fluency impairment.

Teacher of the Blind and Visually Impaired

The services of a certified Teacher of the Blind and Visually-Impaired are available on a full-time equivalent (FTE) basis to students with visual impairments. Through specialized instruction and consultation with regular educators, students may remain in the least restrictive educational environment.

Teacher of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired

The services of a certified Teacher of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired are available on a full-time equivalent (FTE) basis to students with hearing impairments. Through specialized instruction and consultation with regular educators, students may remain in the least restrictive environment. The services of an interpreter may also be contracted under this COSER.
