Permissible (Conditionally)
| In terms of interlibrary loan, it is permissible, on behalf of a patron, to request a copy of an article, poem, etc., from a lending library and to have the item faxed, rather than physically loaned. However, there are some limitations. First, the amount of text actually reproduced is governed by the photocopying guidelines. Second, there is a limit as to how many times an item may be requested and reproduced through interlibrary loan before it is interpreted that the borrowing library is avoiding the purchase of the same item. Finally, the loaning library must destroy the intermediate copy it produced in order to transmit on a fax machine. Within the preceding constraints, interlibrary loan, by fax, is permissible. |
