Women Helping Girls Make Choices

Women Helping Girls Make Choices is a FREE program girls who attend middle schools in the DCMO and ONC BOCES service areas. With the collaborative effort of a number of educators and community resources including co-sponsorship and support by the Secondary Education Department at SUNY Oneonta, we are able to offer the program at SUNY Oneonta.

Program Goals:

1) to encourage young women to pursue higher level math and science by creating a link to real-world careers;

2) to introduce young women to mentors in non-traditional roles;

3) to inspire self-sufficiency, independence and leadership development;

4) to model career planning and decision making; and

5) to provide positive peer interaction.

The event will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the SUNY Oneonta College. Schools participating will enroll a group of up to six students (fifth and sixth grade) and one staff chaperone.  We have a maximum capacity of 150 participants.  Schools may register as many groups as they wish on a first come, first serve basis.

2018 Preliminary Agenda

Keynote Presentation

No Boundaries is the theme for this general session.  Our presenter will share the story of her journey to career stardom.  Our students will be inspired by successful women who achieved fantastic career ranks and recognition.  The presentation sets the stage for our students to dream big and prepare for success.

STEM is for Girls!

By popular demand,  Allison Pfister from Jett industries Inc. returns to demonstrate how you can build a bridge using math and principles of engineering.  The session is all hands on!  Students have an opportunity to apply mathematical concepts to the building competition.  This is an excellent career exploration activity for the student to explore opportunities for design and project development.

The Future of Garbage!

Our students will learn the role they can play in renewable energy, conservation and preserving our resources.  The presenters are ready to demonstrate the importance of this relevant global topic and how our students can prepare for exciting careers of the future.

More Than Doctors and Nurses!

A series of exercises and rotations will allow students to learn about the many careers of the future in healthcare.  Our mentors are preparing hands-on activities to increase awareness of medical field opportunities around the world and right here in their communities.

College Student for a Day!

This is the fun part of our event.  Students will join other college students and dine at the restaurant with the freedom to choose their favorite food from 12-plus food stations and the opportunity to talk to mentors and new friends.
