The goal of the Health and Safety Service is to coordinate programs to assist BOCES and subscribing school districts in compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies, fire prevention codes, and other issues that may affect the overall health and safety of staff, students, and visitors. There are currently 16 school districts subscribing to this service.

Alcohol & Substance Abuse Testing For Bus Drivers

A program to assist BOCES and subscribing component school districts in complying with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. This act requires the testing of all CDL drivers who drive a commercial motor vehicle and perform a safety sensitive function. The service provides participating districts with a model policy and administrative procedures, required reasonable suspicion training for supervisors, employee training regarding policy and procedures and coordination of required testing through a third party contractor. Also provided is a list of Substance Abuse Professionals (SAP's) for evaluating an employee testing positive for alcohol or controlled substances and the maintenance of all records regarding alcohol and controlled substances testing.

DOH & EPA Approved Asbestos Refresher Courses

One Day Handler Refresher
This course is required annually to maintain a DOL Certificate as an Asbestos Handler. Participants are kept up to date with any changes in asbestos regulations. They will learn about the health effects attributed with asbestos exposure, the history and characteristic of asbestos and safe work practices when handling asbestos

One Day Supervisor Refresher
This course is required annually to maintain a DOL Certificate as an Asbestos Supervisor. Participants are kept up to date with any changes in asbestos regulations. They will learn about the health effects attributed with asbestos exposure, the history and characteristic of asbestos and safe work practices when handling asbestos.

1/2 Day Inspector and Management Planner Refreshers
These courses are required annually to maintain a DOL Certificate as asbestos Inspector and/or Management Planner. These two 1/2-day refreshers are combined into one full day of training. Management Planners must attend the Inspector refresher in order to participate in the Management Planner refresher. Participants are kept up to date with any changes in asbestos regulations. They will learn about the health effects attributed with asbestos exposure, the history and characteristic of asbestos and safe work practices when handling asbestos.

Project SAVE (Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Act)

2-Hour Certification Course 

This two-hour violence prevention/intervention course is required for all individuals that are applying for certification status with the New York State Education Department on or after 02/02/01. This includes new certification as a teacher or administrator, teaching assistants, pupil personnel services professionals, school athletic coaches, plus changes in certification that individuals in an educational setting might be applying for (e.g.: provisional to permanent, changing content, etc.)
